Responsive Design Etc.

About me...

Have you ever visited a restaurant with a much-too-detailed menu? Maybe it had 60 dishes on it, with four-line descriptions of each one written in 10-point type. Or perhaps you've seen a menu where you wanted more detail - all it offered was each item's name in boldface, without any indication of what was in it.

What does this have to do with Web design? Well, we deal with menus on the Web, too, and like restaurants that want to entice discerning customers, we want to find the menu sweet spot for our site visitors: just enough detail to keep them engaged, but not so much that they can't find their way around and end up leaving.

Unlike most restaurants, though, we have to think about visitors interacting with our sites on many different devices. And as you've probably guessed by now, the menu sweet spot is different for full-screen viewers and mobile viewers. In fact, full-screen menus and mobile device menus are evolving in opposite directions.
